Window Handle Measurement Guide (UPVC)
Handles & Hinges UPVC Maintenance Ltd is a UK specialist in replacement parts for UPVC windows and doors. Use this guide to measure the key sizes for the two common UPVC window handle types: espag (spindle type) and cockspur (spur over a wedge).
1) Identify your handle type
- Espag handle — Square metal spindle on the back that drives the window lock (mushroom/roller cams). Usually two screws in-line.
- Cockspur handle — Curved “spur” hooks over a plastic wedge on the frame. Usually two or three visible screws on the backplate.
2) Measuring an espag window handle
-
Spindle length
Measure from the underside of the handle backplate to the tip of the square spindle. Choose the same or the next size down if your original protruded too far. -
Spindle section
Most espag spindles are 7 mm square. Confirm yours is square and not worn rounded. -
Fixing screw centres
Measure centre-to-centre between the two screw holes. Most espag handles share a standard pattern, but measure to be sure. -
Handing & key
Many espag handles are inline (non-handed). If yours is cranked, note left or right. Check whether you require locking (keyed) or non-locking. -
Finish
Choose to match the existing furniture (white, chrome/satin, gold/brass, black, etc.).
3) Measuring a cockspur window handle
-
Stack height (the “A” dimension)
Place the handle on a flat surface and measure from the surface to the underside of the spur. This must match your frame/wedge height. -
Handing
The spur points the way. Order left-hand or right-hand to match your original. -
Backplate fixings
Note whether your handle has two or three screws, and the spacing between them (centre-to-centre) if needed. -
Finish
Pick the colour/finish to match your other hardware.
Quick reference table
Handle type | Measure | Why it matters |
---|---|---|
Espag | Spindle length (backplate underside → tip) | Ensures spindle reaches the lock gearbox correctly |
Espag | Spindle section (typically 7 mm square) | Must fit the gearbox drive square |
Espag | Screw centres (two in-line) | Mounting holes must align |
Cockspur | Stack height “A” (base → underside of spur) | Must match frame/wedge height for a tight close |
Cockspur | Handing (left/right) | Spur orientation must match original |
Both | Finish (white/chrome/gold/black etc.) | Match existing furniture and style |
FAQ
What spindle length do I need? Measure your old one from backplate to tip. If in doubt, choose the same length; too long can bottom out, too short may not engage.
My cockspur won’t latch after fitting — why? The stack height probably doesn’t match the wedge/frame gap. Re-measure the “A” dimension or change the wedge.
Do I need a locking handle? Many replacement handles are lockable with keys included. Choose locking for added security or where required by insurers/landlords.
