How to Change a Cockspur Window Handle
Handles & Hinges UPVC Maintenance Ltd is the UK expert in UPVC hardware. This guide walks you through safely removing your old cockspur handle and fitting a new one — with no guesswork required.
Tip: Open and support the sash while working. Use
masking tape or a shim behind the backplate to protect the frame.
Tools & parts
- Pozi/Phillips screwdriver
- Replacement cockspur handle
- Optional: spare screws and screw caps
Step-by-step
-
Remove old handle
Open the window slightly, pop off screw covers, and undo the visible screws (usually 2 or 3). Lift the handle straight off. -
Check stack height (“A” dimension)
Place the old handle flat, measuring from the surface to the underside of the spur. This tells you your handle's stack height and ensures a snug fit. -
Confirm handing
Look at which way the spur hooks—left or right—and match that when ordering the new handle. -
Fit the replacement
Align the handle and secure it with the screws you removed (or new stainless screws). Tighten until snug. -
Test operation
Close the window and move the handle through its full range to make sure the spur engages the wedge properly.
Quick reference

---|---|---|
Stack height | Surface to underside of spur (A dimension) | Ensures snug engagement with frame |

Fixings | 2–3 screws | Keep backplate secure and flush |
FAQ
Handle doesn’t close flush? The stack height likely doesn’t match. Re-measure the A dimension and order the correct product.
Can I use same screw holes? Yes—unless brittle or damaged. Re-use where possible for best fit and aesthetics.
Keyed handle or plain? Most cockspur handles can be ordered keyed (matching cylinder) or non-locking for convenience or security.
