UPVC Door Handle Measuring Guide

Handles & Hinges UPVC Maintenance Ltd are UK experts in UPVC door spares. This guide walks you through measuring the key dimensions—PZ, screw centres, and handle length—so you get the right fit, first time.

Top tip: Always measure firmly with a steel tape or vernier. Some handles use 7 mm spindles, others 8 mm. Measure carefully to avoid returns.

Quick measuring steps

  1. Measure the PZ (centres)
This is the distance from the centre of the spindle (where the handle square goes through) to the centre of the keyhole or cylinder. Common sizes: 92 mm (modern), 70 mm or 68 mm (older).
  2. Measure screw centres
Distance between the fixing screws—typically centre to centre. Common patterns: 122 mm, 148 mm, 211 mm, 215 mm.
  3. Measure overall length
Tip to tip of the handle including any locking buttons/keys. Useful for finding a visual match.

Dimension lookup table

Dimension How to measure Why it matters
PZ (centres) From spindle centre to keyhole centre Must match the lock case
Screw centres Between main fix screws Mounting holes must align

FAQ

Why does PZ matter? The lock case sets this distance—if it doesn’t match, the spindle won't engage or the keyhole won’t align.

What if screw holes don’t line up? Some plate types have slotted holes for 5–10 mm adjustability. If not, look for a handle with matching screw centres or adjust lightly.

Does overall length matter? Yes — handles that are too long can clash with glass panes or frames; too short can look awkward or sit off-centre. Match visually as well as functionally.
