How to Change a UPVC Window Handle
Handles & Hinges UPVC Maintenance Ltd helps UK homeowners and trades replace UPVC window handles quickly and safely. Follow the steps below for the two common types: espag and cockspur.
Safety note: Open and support the sash while working. Keep fingers clear of pinch points and don’t overtighten into reinforcement.
Tools & parts
- Pozi/Phillips screwdriver
- Replacement handle (espag or cockspur)
- Optional: new screws & screw caps
Replace an espag handle (spindle type)
- Expose the screws
Flip up or pop off the plastic screw covers on the handle backplate. - Remove the old handle
Undo the two fixing screws and pull the handle away, withdrawing the square spindle from the lock. - Check spindle length
Measure from the underside of the backplate to the spindle tip on the old handle. Match this (most are 7 mm square spindles). - Fit the new handle
Insert the spindle into the gearbox, align holes, and refit the two screws. Tighten firmly but don’t overtighten. - Test & finish
Operate the handle fully to confirm smooth locking, then clip the screw covers back on.
Replace a cockspur handle (spur over wedge)
- Remove the old handle
Pop off any screw caps and undo the visible screws (two or three depending on model). Lift the handle away. - Check the stack height (“A” dimension)
Place the old handle on a flat surface and measure from the surface to the underside of the spur. Match this height (or adjust the frame wedge accordingly). - Choose the correct hand
The spur points the way: order left- or right-hand to match your original. - Fit the new handle
Offer up the new handle, align screw holes, and secure. Do not overtighten. - Test & finish
Close the window and confirm the spur engages the wedge snugly without forcing.
Quick reference
Handle type | Key measurement | Notes |
---|---|---|
Espag | Spindle length (backplate underside → tip) | Spindle is typically 7 mm square; two inline fixing screws |
Cockspur | Stack height “A” | Match existing wedge/frame gap; 2–3 fixing screws |
Both | Handing / Finish | Left/right where applicable; choose white, chrome, gold, black, etc. |
FAQ
The new espag handle won’t turn — why? The spindle may be too long and bottoming out, or not aligned with the gearbox. Re-check length; try a shorter spindle if needed.
Cockspur won’t latch? The stack height likely doesn’t match. Re-measure the A-dimension or adjust/replace the wedge.
Locking vs non-locking? Many replacements include keys; choose locking for extra security or to match insurance/landlord requirements.
